You can donate once or set up a regular monthly allowance. We are not yet a charitable organization, so we cannot yet issue you a donation receipt, but we are working on it.

Even small donations matter

Sewing machine

With only 2000 Rand (120 Euro) we have purchased a used industrial sewing machine. With this machine we ensure that two choir members can earn their monthly living with it. They repair the clothes of the people in the area, sew new clothes and/or design the clothes for the choir. One of them has just lost his mother at the end of January and is now solely responsible for his family and their upkeep, including his disabled sister.
For only 500 Rand (30 Euro) a simple sewing machine can be bought, which allows another member to do smaller jobs for a fee.

Carpet

300 Rand (20 Euro). With this you would embellish the hut a little. Most of them are simply open at the bottom, so that many critters can get in, or the simplest floor, so that it looks really uncomfortable. We want everyone to feel comfortable in the cabins and are working on providing everyone with simple carpets.

Food

The refrigerator in our hut should always be full for the students living there. With basic food, fruits and something to drink. Simple but satisfying. In addition, every choir member should be able to knock at any time if there is nothing to eat at home – for lack of money or as a punishment, and then get something to eat here. To ensure this we need 1000 Rand (60 Euro) each month.

Bicycle

With only 200 Rand (12 Euro) you allow the choir members further mobility. Khaelitsha is enormously large and in many parts also dangerous. There are long ways to go shopping, to the market, to choir practice, to friends. With a bicycle it is much easier.

Colours

300 Rand (20 Euro) we want it to be pretty as well as necessary. We want the inhabitants of the hut to be able to paint it in their favourite colour. We buy the paint and the residents paint it themselves.

Hut

Since many choir members live with their families, since a place of their own is only possible after the wedding at the earliest, many of them live in a very small area. It is not unusual for eight, nine or even more people to live in a 2x3m hut. There they sleep, cook and clean themselves. A lot of people sleep in a group in one bed (if you are lucky) or on the floor. Many have never slept alone in a bed. We want to change that. The monthly rent for a cottage (6x6mm with three single beds costs about 400 Rand (25 Euro). With this you make three people happy at once. In the meantime we have bought another hut (3x3m). For this only 4000 Rand (250 Euro) are necessary, because we save monthly costs.

Internet/WiFi/Phone

Internet With just 60 Rand (3,50 Euro) you can ensure that the choir members are connected to the outside world. Check emails, WhatsApp messages, do some googling, look it up, for all of us a matter of course, in Khayelitsha something special, because for some priceless, even if a telephone is available. If you want to donate a little more, you can take over a WIFI connection in a hut – once or regularly. For only 500 Rand they make sure that everyone in the hut has free access to the internet – visitors included. For those who do not yet have a simple smartphone, we are looking for sponsors for such devices. We have already bought or collected some devices and had them delivered to South Africa with friends. For as little as 500 Rand (30 Euro) you can give a young person access to knowledge and contact with his friends.

Hygiene products

Hygiene products Many girls do not go to school during their menstruation because they simply do not have any hygiene products. Three girls live in the girls’ hut. For only 100 Rand (6 Euro) we can buy enough sanitary pads etc. for all of them, so that this need not be a reason not to go to school or university. Condoms for the boys are also freely available and free of charge for all of us.

Fridge

We need at least one more fridge. We have already bought a used one for only 1000 Rand (60 Euro). So food can last longer and be bought in stock. In the heat many food items would otherwise spoil unnecessarily.

Kitchen

With only 500 Rand (30 Euro) we can buy basic equipment (cooker, kettle, pots, pan, dishes) for a cabin. We want everyone to be self-sufficient, we also want to teach the boys to cook. Everyone should be able to help themselves in the future.

Furniture

Most of them live with a lot of family members in a very small space. Studying or concentrated work for school is nowhere to be thought of. Many try to do at least sometimes what is required at night with the flashlight of their telephone (if available). That this has an effect on grades is probably self-evident. We create a room in which everyone can study and work during the day. For this we need chairs for 100 Rand (6 Rand) and also tables for 250 Rand (15 Euro).

Computer

We want to buy a laptop for at least one cabin. The public schools are free, but poorly equipped, and the individual students naturally do not have such a thing at their disposal – neither at school nor at home. Also the public universities do not provide any computers. Only private students have access and therefore knowledge in using computers, we want to change that. For a used laptop we only need 1500 Rand (90 Euro).

Training

We need 5000 Rand (180 Euro) in order to be able to provide training for one or the other. Whether cook, driver, physiotherapist or even hairdresser or beautician, to earn a living more easily or something for the family income. Many sell sweets at train stations because they cannot afford education. We want to change that too. We want to give them a perspective.

Driving licence

With only 2000 Rand (120€) you can finance the driving licence for young people, which many of them do not even have, because it is simply too expensive. Unlike us, these young people wait years for it and still cannot afford it. With a driving licence they could not only be more mobile – public transport is virtually non-existent, but they would also have the chance of many jobs, which in turn could finance their living.

Bed

In many cabins two, three or even more people sleep in a single bed. They sleep on the side so that there is even a little space. Every movement wakes the others. Sleeping on the floor is not an alternative, because the mattresses are already there or another family member is already sleeping there. We want to change this situation. We have now bought five beds, so that everyone who sleeps in our hut has his own bed for himself. Already for 600 Rand (35 Euro) you can buy a bed with mattress and bed linen for another choir member.

Power/Electricity

Power supply is a big problem in South Africa, power cuts are normal even in the affluent areas. But in the townships there are also illegally tapped lines that hang around openly in the area, so that playing children or even adults e.g. on the way home in the dark sometimes touch them and often get a deadly electric shock. In our huts we want a regular power connection, so that – if there is electricity – at least no danger is involved. For only 200 Rand (12 Euro) / month we can guarantee this.

Cake

Would you like to give one of the choir members an unforgettable day? It is very easy – with very little money. I organized a little party for Zizipho’s birthday. With only 120 Rand, someone who has a birthday gets a cake and a small present. Nobody – not even the older ones – has celebrated their birthday so far, but each of these young people is worth a party and a cake.

If you can’t decide, you can of course donate any amount you like, we will make sure that it goes directly into the project. You can donate once or support us with a regular amount. We are pleased that you would like to help us and the young people and thank you.

Another way to support Isibane se africa is by buying our music in the shop !

We would like to thank for the friendly support:

Allison Williams for the transcription and translations.

You can help us a lot by spreading this article. Send a link to your acquaintances and friends. Share this page with your colleagues, their club members and in your social networks. That alone would help us a lot. Many thanks for that!

Thank you so much!
